PURIM

Purim is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from annihilation at the hands of an official of the Achaemenid Empire named Haman, as it is recounted in the Book of Esther. Haman was the royal vizier to the Persian king Ahasuerus.

  How is Purim celebrated?
  • Reading the Book of Esther: The central celebration is a public reading of the Book of Esther, usually in a synagogue.
  • Costumes: People dress up in costumes, often based on figures from the story of Esther.
  • Parades and pageants: Schools, shuls, and other community organizations host parades and pageants.
  • Food and drink: People feast on traditional foods, like triangular sweets called hamantashan.
  • Gift giving: People send gifts of food and drink to loved ones.
  • Charity: People give to those in need.
  • Noisemaking: People make noise with noisemakers when Haman's name is read aloud.
